When Camille and I moved to Salt Lake we quickly became fascinated with the neighborhood. We regularly go on walks just to enjoy the variety of vernacular and styled architecture that each home reflects. We have since found out that Camille's family has long been tied to the Avenues and Capitol Hill neighborhoods, which made them even more interesting. I began to think about the layers of each home. The coats of paint. The changing exteriors. The history that has taken place inside the walls. The interest has spread from our own neighborhood into the burrows of Rose Park and further west into Magna. The work for the Art Access show will explore what has happened and continues to happen inside the homes that make up our immediate micro-societies. Just like the home and its history, the work is built with layers- some that are telling and some that are obscure. The layers come from what I learn as I listen to family stories, stories from people who have lived in this area for decades, and stories from the youth that will soon be adding an additional layer of their own.

The 35 x 35 show is just about here. The show features 35 Utah artists under the age of 35. This is the next generation of Utah art. The show opening is Friday September 18, 6:00-9:00 p.m. at Finch Lane Gallery. The address is 1325 E 100 S, SLC. Hope to see you there.

The 24 Hour show opening was great. As usual Kayo Gallery had a good crowd. The work below will be hanging there, along with work by seven other artists, through the third week of September. Kayo is at 177 East 300 South, Salt Lake City.

Experiencing the power of art:

My wife and I met Duston Todd at the local market. We were amazed by his work. His photography mums the argument that photography is not art. We approached Duston about making a trade and he agreed. Turns out he had been wanting an artist to depict an experience that only he and his family truly understood. The result was a great experience of input and interpretation, and the painting above. Palmer's Gallery show:


Opening night at Palmer's Gallery went great! There was a big crowd and a lot of positive input. The show runs through mid July. Palmer's is at 378 W 300 S in Salt Lake City. These images are of some of the work I have there.
